With the number of online teaching platforms growing it can make it difficult to decide which is the best fit for you. For individuals that count on online teaching as the bulk of their income, it is a smart move to diversify and work for multiple platforms. In the summer of 2020, I began teaching on Outschool. It compliments my current Vipkid and Cambly teaching schedules and allows me to teach additional hours, increase my earnings, and utilize my creativity to develop my own curriculum and courses. Since I am still new to the platform I have been trying out several different topics; from Intro to Spanish language classes, to guided drawing sessions. It is extremely refreshing to be able to design my own lessons and share my passions with young learners.

What Can I Teach on Outschool?
What can you teach on Outschool? The possibilities are endless! If you have a passion for it and can make it fun and engaging for young learners you can teach it! From Cooking classes to book clubs to tea time fun and how to run your own business courses. Unlike other online platforms, the responsibility for lesson planning is on the teacher. Teachers are encouraged to teach topics they are passionate and knowledgeable about. Whether this is through formal education or life experience it doesn't matter. For more sensitive topics Outschool requires teachers to provide their credentials and experience in the area. Click here to get an idea of the variety of classes currently on the platform!
Before posting a new class on the platform, Outschool will provide you with a lesson plan template to complete. You will submit this lesson plan for approval and it will either be approved or returned to you with suggestions or things to update before you can go live with the course.
What is the Earning Potential & What are the Hours you can Work on Outschool?
As an independent contractor on Outschool, you have complete control over your schedule and your pay. The rate you set is per student per class and the price of your classes can vary depending on the topic and the length of the session. Students pay per class or per course (you can create classes that meet multiple times over the course of several weeks). Outschool does not charge teachers anything upfront, however, they do take a percentage based on your earnings. Whatever price you set you will receive 70% of the earnings and Outschool takes the remaining 30%. A fair amount considering they market your classes, handle payments, the zoom subscription, and offer support.
For example, if the cost of a half-hour class is set to $10 and 6 students enroll the total earnings for this class would be $60. Outschool would take $20 so at the end of the day, you would earn $40 (before taxes)...not too shabby!
How Old Are the Students?
You have the option to create classes for students between the ages of 3-18. You will state the age range in your class description. It is suggested that the age span for any individual class does not exceed 3 years.
How Can I Communicate with Students & Families on Outschool?
As students enroll in your classes they will begin "following" your profile which means they are notified as new classes are posted. You will receive an email each time a new student enrolls in a course. The student and the adult who enrolled the child will appear in the virtual classroom where you can easily send them a private message or post messages for the entire class to view. Outschool asks that all communication goes through the platform to both protect the teachers and families.
How Long are Classes on Outschool?
Classes can be as short as 15 minutes and as long as120 minutes. For younger learners, I suggest shorter classes due to shorter attention spans and longer sessions for older students, however, it is really up to you and your discretion.
How Does Outschool Pay Me?
Outschool handles all payments and sends them via PayPal. You can connect your PayPal to your bank account to easily make transfers. Payments are sent about a week after the session has been taught. You can easily keep track of your lifetime earnings on your teaching dashboard.
Where do Classes Take Place?
Classes are taught through Zoom. Outschool handles the Zoom subscription so you do not have to worry about the length of your classes exceeding the "free" amount. Both teachers and students access the Zoom link from the virtual classroom accessed by clicking on the class posting.
You can create a PowerPoint to go with your class, screen share, or just have students view what is within range of your camera. It is totally up to you on how you want to facilitate your classes!
